"Epic of Gilgamesh" term papers and essays

The Epic of Gilgamesh is thought to be the oldest surviving work of literature on earth, with the first known versions dating back to the 18th century B.C.  As the term would imply, the Epic of Gilgamesh is a long poem about the heroic deeds and travels of Gilgamesh, the King of Uruk.  Though Gilgamesh was two-thirds god and one-third man and was indeed very mighty, he tended to cause trouble by raping women and enslaving his people.  To distract Gilgamesh and relieve his subjects, the gods made a friend for him that would be his equal, a wild man named Enkidu.  The first part of the Epic relates the duos daring feats.  The standard version of the Epic of Gilgamesh consists of 12 tablets of cuneiform script that were found in the library of Ashurbanipal of Nineveh in 1849.  This version dates back to between 1300-1000 B.C. and is considered to be a compilation of earlier poems which were discovered in 1853 by Hormuzd Rassam.  Interestingly, the Epic of Gilgamesh contains many similarities to the Judeo-Christian Bible, particularly the Creation Story and the account of the Great Flood.  While some scholars use this information to defend assertions that Bible stories are mythical and lack historical authenticity, others say that the similarities are evidence of differing accounts of the same event.  Artifacts have been discovered that verify the existence of at least one character in the Epic of Gilgamesh, Enmabaragesi, and these discoveries tend to bolster the historicity of this ancient document.
