The ability of a company or organization to keep its employees 'on board' is known as employee retention. While the concept of retention is defined as the outcome of the efforts to retain employees, many times it also refers to the actual efforts made to retain workers and stop them from leaving the business. By keeping numbers of employees leaving the organization down, the company keeps costs lower. A number of methods exist regarding employee retention strategy and these are adopted by employee retention management sectors. These include the expectancy theory which increases instrumentality in a company to implement a rewards system that will satisfy the worker. In order to understand the expectations of workers, many companies run regular employee retention surveys which measure concepts such as overall satisfaction, corporate culture, pay and benefits and work environment. Since employee retention has a lot to do with worker motivation, some managers adopt different theory models in order to identify ways to retain their workers. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, for example, can be adapted to employee retention and optimize retention rates. Another theory would be Herzberg's Motivator-Hygiene Theory which calls for the maintaining of high standards in order to motivate workers.
