Emphysema term papers and essays

Emphysema is one of the most common lung diseases, which falls into the category of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The main cause of emphysema is smoking, although it is possible – but rare – for non-smokers to develop the disease. Those who are exposed to certain gases in the workplace or those who cook over an open fire without proper ventilation, are also at risk. Symptoms of emphysema include coughing, fatigue, shortness of breath, wheezing and respiratory infections. Emphysema is usually diagnosed through a test called the spirometry which involves blowing into a machine to test lung capacity. Medical practitioners also back up their diagnosis through the use of x-rays, blood tests and stethoscopes. Emphysema is a chronic disease for which there is no cure, however patients can do much to relieve the symptoms for themselves, including giving up smoking altogether to slow down damage to the lungs. COPD sufferers also use medication such as inhalers, steroids and anti-inflammatory medication such as montelukast. In particularly bad incidents of emphysema, patients may need intravenous steroids, oxygen therapy and assistance to breath. Many times, emphysema patients will be prescribed antibiotics to reduce the chance of infections during flare-ups of the disease. Complications from the COPD include irregular heartbeat, pneumonia, osteoporosis and heart failure. Emphysema can be avoided by not smoking – the number one cause of this disease.
