This paper provides a reflection on an introductory chapter in Sered's volume "Priestess, Mother, Sacred Sister" and a paper by Minoo Moallem explaining how feminism and Islamic fundamentalism are not diametrically opposed in that they are responses to the same complaints about modernity and where it has situated women in places of disrespect. Attention is given to questions that both works inspire as well as 'givens' of feminist secular culture that may not fully grasp matters of religion, gender, formal or unofficial roles women have played.
