This paper discusses elements of change in the cities in the last two or three decades. The paper addresses the flight of many social groups to the suburbs, the internationalization of urban centers and the role of urban and regional planning. The paper then notes that in spite of the trends toward urban and regional planning to overcome some of the disparities between urban and suburban regions, between poor and rich, these differences persist and may even be increased by the choices made by planners.

"The city is a dynamic place, a place of change, a place that evolves, a place of conflict, and a place of resolution. The city centers of America have been changing radically for decades. Where cities used to more or less grow in their own, the modern trend is for urban planning to "design" the city, or at least portions of it, and to try to impose some kind of order on what was once a more organic growth process. Different cities handle this issue in different ways, but political leaders like to at least appear to be taking control of the process and to "correct" what they see as failures of the past while designing something that will outlast them into the future. This has been a process that ha also been matched by county and state efforts to cope with the developing relationship between urban and suburban regions. It will be many years before the results of some of the plans being put into force become clear, but in the meantime, cities are marked more and more by revitalization, gentrification, a renewal of the urban center, and an attempt to bring together the different social elements residing in the cities as well as accommodating those who have moved to the suburbs."Cite this Term Paper:
