Quality is a significant and a powerful force in a competitive business environment that contributes to the desire of many organizations to apply total quality management (TQM) concepts into the standard business practices of the organization. This paper provides a definition of TQM. Included is a description of the impact of globalization on quality and an analysis of traditional management styles with quality-focused management styles. A more concise definition of TQM states, "total Quality Management is a [holistic] business management methodology that aligns the activities of all employees in an organization with the common focus of customer satisfaction [to be achieved] through continuous improvement in the quality of all activities [processes], goods and services" (Burrill and Ledolter, 1999, p.35)."
