"In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. By the end of the 1880's, approximately 48,000 telephones were in use in the United States. By 1941, Motorola had developed two-way radios to install in police cruisers for the Detroit Police Department. In 1977, experimental cellular systems began in Chicago and Washington, D.C. leading the way for the world's first cellular service company known as Advanced Mobil Phone Service (AMPS). By the middle of the 1980's, Motorola introduced the first truly mobile radiotelephone and the first commercial cellular system began operating in Chicago, Illinois.
