On February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed while walking through a gated community by a neighborhood watch captain named George Zimmerman, 28. This paper discusses the events leading up to that shooting. It talks about how Trayvon was staying with his father and his father's fiancee in that gated community, and how he had left to buy snacks from a local 7-Eleven. The paper further recounts how, on his way back, Martin encountered Zimmerman, who phoned 911 to report Martin as a suspicious individual. The paper then discusses how Zimmerman's story and those of witnesses differed, and how these differences, along with police failure to arrest Zimmerman for the killing led to resentment, suspicion and anger on the part of the African-American community. Finally, the paper explores how this incident is similar to the Los Angeles Rodney King case, and explains how Zimmerman was finally arrested six weeks after the incident and charged with second degree murder.

From the Paper:

"Since the arrest of George Zimmerman, much of the indignant anger driving the controversy has waned. But suspicion and resentment linger, and will probably do so for a long time. Whether Zimmerman will be found guilty of the charges is yet to be seen, but hopefully whatever the outcome, the truth of what happened will be revealed. Moreover, one must hope that the outcome of the trial will not result in the same outbreaks of violence as occurred in Los Angeles following the acquittal of Rodney King's attackers.

"But then again, as Mr. Rahman, the Sanford retiree, said: Central Florida is not Los Angeles."
