From the Paper:"Mary Kay, Inc. is unusual in the sense that the company was founded by a woman at a time when female entrepreneurs and leaders were an unlikely phenomenon in the United States. The differentiation however does not end there. Mary Kay Ash, the founder of the company, promoted revolutionary ideas regarding business practice and employee relationships by means of her "nine principles." Many of these principles are accepted as sound business practice today. Ms. Kay's corporate principles and values survive her in the continuing flourishing cosmetics company she started in 1963. Indeed, her company appears to thrive wherever it takes root; one of the mot recent Mary Kay expansions was to China, where exponentially increasing sales soon followed a somewhat rickety start.
"When she started her cosmetics business, Mary Kay Ash was unique in two basic respects. Firstly, she was a woman in a business world generally ruled and regulated by men. Indeed, she left her job because men she had trained were consistently promoted to positions above hers, with much higher pay (Velasquez, 2010). Secondly, she had a set of values that she was determined to promote within her business, as she did in her life. By her own admission, money was a definite consideration when she first started, but it was not the prime motivation (Ash, 2008). Instead, her main goal was to enrich the lives of women (Underwood, 2003). With this in mind, she started a business that would grow exponentially to become a global establishment."
