The central thesis of this paper is that the effective principal can be associated with a set of behaviors and qualities that constitute his or her role. Specifically, the effective principal is in touch with the times, knowing how to lead in an era which has produced dramatic changes in education. The effective school principle is also an individual who improves learning and teaching for all students, establishes the school as a learning community, is comfortable with accountability mandates and structures, and generally faces head-on all of the challenges that comprise education today. Research supporting this thesis is presented and discussed in this paper.
