The paper then explains how learning differs from performance and looks at the various schools of thought on how learning occurs, including behaviorism, the Gestalt school of thought and the constructionist view. The paper concludes that there is no single view of learning that is most appropriate for coming to a 'true' understanding of such a complicated and enduring process; all the various perspectives provide useful and scientifically valid evidence that can help us understand the process of learning and in turn, become better learners.

"One can look at learning as an evolutionary adaptation that has promoted the survival of not only our species, but of many species (Tarpy, 1997). Learning to adapt to a changing environment can greatly improve one's ability to survive, especially when one considers the existence of most animals in their natural habitats. Natural selection has repeatedly selected the individuals in any given species who learned to adapt to their environment better than others. Thus, the ability to learn is something that is deeply ingrained into the human brain and there are a number of different ways in which learning can be viewed. One interesting perspective in examining learning is to take a look at how it solves a variety of different adaptive problems faced by animals and humans alike. How do we learn about our environment? How do we learn what we can predict on a regular basis? Or in learning terminology, how do we learn what a specific event signals? This type of learning is called classical conditioning, in which a stimulus that is presented generates a predictable response (Polito, 2005; Tarpy, 1997). Another problem that would require adaptive learning skills is becoming aware of the consequences of specific acts, or of our own specific behaviors."
