This paper discusses how, due to the current economic environment, businesses need to develop a competitive edge that is sustainable. This objective may be met by embedding IT in the existing processes so that the management can access more and timely information about them. An example of this strategy is the implementation and use of groupware systems. The paper then explains that in order for the groupware system to be effective, the incentive system must be based upon collaboration. It is only through the incentive system that the management can encourage the employees to exhibit the strategically right behavioural patterns and this incentive system must be communicated to the employees. The paper goes on to describe the three strategies that need to be implemented to reach this end.
From the Paper:''The process of benchmarking may be defined as the process of comparing an organization's work practices to those which are considered to be the best in the industry (Pearlson & Saunders, 2007). This is a recommended process when it comes to implementing and using groupware because the employees will be unfamiliar with the product. Therefore the management needs to access some sort of a database for best practices in this regard and this objective may be met through hiring the external change management consultant who will have managed such projects in other organizations as well. Therefore he will be in a position to advise the management as to best practices to implement when it comes to implementing and using groupware. The best practices will have to be organization wide since the groupware's operations will change the organizational culture itself. The employees will be interacting with each other differently than before in terms of a greater level of inter-departmental collaboration. The change management consultant can bring to bear outside industry knowledge assets in managing the cultural change successfully.''
