From the Paper:

''There is little doubt among philosophers that man has a soul. One need only contrast a living body to a dead one to see that there is something profoundly different between the two. This difference has been recognized as ``the soul.'' The soul is identified as the ``ultimate internal principle by which we think, feel, and will, and by which our bodies our animated.'' The two primary functions attributed to the soul are thinking and moving. The Latin root for the word soul is ``anima,'' from which the English word ``animate'' comes. The word ``soul'' is often used to indicate the vital activities which make a body ``alive,'' while the word ``mind'' is sometimes used to denote the state of consciousness. Additionally, theology makes the distinction that the will and the intellect are distinct faculties of the soul.''
