Description:

This paper examines the IMAX Corporation from inception to its current business endeavors, and relates that since its introduction at the 1967 world's fair in Montreal, IMAX has been an influential force in educational and family entertainment. The paper provides an overview of the new technology and product offered by IMAX, and notes that whether or not this will turn out to be a lucrative move for IMAX is still unknown. The does notes, however, that it gives the average American moviegoer something new, innovative and exciting to anticipate.

From the Paper:

"The "IMAX Experience" is defined by the sheer size of the screen - and thereby the images - as well as the clarity: a theatre-goer at an IMAX theatre notices that the screen and images wrap around their view, exercising the peripheral vision at all times. This is accomplished in three phases; first, the piece is photographed using 15-perforation, 70mm film. Most major Hollywood blockbusters are filmed using 35mm film; 70mm film is twice as wide. Additionally, standard 35mm film has 5 perforations per frame, whereas IMAX uses 15-perforation film, which is three times taller. The result is a picture that is more than six times larger, and thereby six times the resolution and clarity of a Hollywood film. The 15/70 film used in IMAX cameras is the largest possible format. Secondly, the IMAX screen itself can be up to eight stories high. The screens are painted silver, in order to maximize the amount of light reflected back to the audience. These screens can be half the size of a football field, and are designed to fully immerse the viewer in the film. Thirdly, the IMAX projector utilizes a Rolling Loop technology, which allows a superior image and greater focus steadiness (IMAX Corporation). The technology itself brings the best of nearly every technical element of cinema together in one theatre."
