Description:

The paper relates that according to O'Brien and Szeman (78), representation is very much concerned with power since representation usually reproduces and naturalizes relations of social power. The paper discusses how celebrities appear within a certain context and they thrive because of emphasis on materialism and consumerism. The paper notes that to a large extent, the celebrity is omnipotent because, as Burkhart (228) maintains, the mass media are omnipresent so that no person is free of their influence over their personal lives. The paper then explains how from a symbolic interactionist perspective, the most appropriate image of the celebrity is a false god; the celebrity is a major part of a system of signification that class, race and other factors are without any problems while beneath the surface is the concealed reality. The paper explains that the celebrity is removed from average society but intermittent appearances transmit the vital message that the status quo is intact and that the society is functioning at its optimal level.
