The paper discusses how the world existed under the threat of a devastating confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union for decades during the Cold War. Furthermore, the paper explains that for over seventy-years the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) was ruled by a heavy-handed Communist regime that provided very little freedoms and opportunities to its citizenry (Strayer 4). The paper shows how both of these conditions led to the rise of a new kind of leader in the Soviet Republic, and eventually to the downfall of Communism and its tyranny when the ominous hammer and sickle flag of the USSR was lowered forever on Christmas Day in 1991, at 7:30 in the evening, and was promptly replaced by the Russian white, red, and blue tricolor flag (Strayer 3).
