This paper examines how the historical context of nursing knowledge development can be described via a timeline ranging from Florence Nightingale in 1860 to Margaret Newman in 1986. It briefly looks at how nursing theorists through the century have made contributions to the art and science of nursing. The paper concludes that the foundations of nursing theory have remained constant, although nursing profession philosophies have been modified over time to adjust to the needs of society.
From the Paper:"Community health nursing incorporates daily many of the theorists' concepts. In using Peplau's theory, she identifies the four phases of a nurse-client relationship; orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution (Fawcett, 2006). The nurse-client relationship occurs upon coordinating home care for the patient. The nurse is observing the patient during this time, and attempting to respond to the behavior of the patient. The nurse is also looking to provide rationale to the patient for what is to be done. Dorothea Orem's theory has made the most notable impact in the area of community health nursing. The theory of self-care framework suggests the nurse view the person as capable of deliberate and independent action. The goal of community health service is to promote patient independence and interdependence of self care. "
