From the Paper:

"Strolling through the jazz department of any post-secondary institution can be an aural treat. Day and night, rows of pianists and other instrumentalists sweat out grueling exercises assigned by their teachers to close the gap between their sound and their idols'. Every once in a while, someone plays something really fresh that's never been heard before and the piano players are inspired to go home and practice becoming open to the realization that something new is always waiting to be discovered. In the last century, jazz piano has evolved through the outstanding musicianship of certain performers. Jazz pianists have often drawn from other styles of music to blend with and enhance their own. These composers, players, and arrangers used their innovation to take their ideas one step beyond their knowledge."
