From the Paper:

"The Greek social order was distributed between the free people and the slaves; the slaves were the property of the free people. Slaves were laborers and servants and had no legal rights. Occasionally, slaves were purchased from slave traders, and some were prisoners of war. A number of slaves lived with their owners; however, not many were skilled and very few were paid. The position of the businessman and the artesian became increasingly important. Aristocrats employed hired laborers that allowed them to partake in social activities; the central activity of the aristocrat was the symposium."
