Description:

The paper outlines Swanson's mid-range theory of caring in perinatal nursing that is concerned with the potential for trauma and/or loss, and that recognizes the tenuous and temporary state of pregnancy. The paper explains how this theory addresses miscarriage, perinatal and neonatal death, and asserts that as a general theory of caring, it succeeds in describing the ideal attributes of a care provider regardless of their involvement in the perinatal care process.

From the Paper:

"Swanson's mid-range theory of caring in perinatal nursing was inductively developed from studies in three perinatal care settings. As a mid-range theory, it draws together elements from wide-range theories of nursing and combines them in a clinical-specific setting. However, it differs from other mid-range theories in its origin. It is not unusual for mid-range theories of nursing care to be drawn from clinical experiences, but the philosophical underpinnings of mid-range theories drawn from the abstract and applied at the clinical level are generally taken to be more thorough, stable, or tested. Scientifically, one cannot perform enough tests to make a theory unfalsifiable, but there are a number of theories used in nursing and medicine in general that have had enough proof, although they tend to be low-level or high-level rather than mid-range theories.
"Swanson's theory of perinatal caring is also very concerned with the potential for trauma and/or loss, and recognizes the tenuous and temporary state of pregnancy. Miscarriage as an event in a patient's life can be grievously mishandled, if medical care personnel and family members do not allow the mother to grieve her loss in an appropriate way, and for a sufficient length of time."
