"Major US airlines have established marketing alliances with each other as a result Southwest Airlines has recently begun code-sharing with ATA Airlines, which is due to the company's acquisition of certain ATA assets not an alliance. Alliances allow competitors of the company to expand the flight network available to their customers without having to invest as much capital as is required for an acquisition or for establishing a base at a new destination.
