From the Paper:

"This paper compares and contrasts the theme of sociopolitical change in Anton Chekhov's Cherry Orchard and Slawomir Mrozek's Tango, or the Need for Order and Harmony. The paper commences with a brief biographical sketch of Chekhov and Mrozek, noting the remarkable parallels in the two men's lives. It then explores in detail the historical backdrop against which each play is set, noting that the first half of the twentieth century was a time of tremendous social and political upheaval in Russia and Poland, and in the world at large, and that Chekhov's perspective was prospective on this time of upheaval, while Mrozek's was retrospective. The paper then progresses to a structural analysis of the two plays, with special emphasis on the similarity of the character types represented and the allegorical nature of both works. This is followed by a thematic analysis, which focuses in particular on the theme of change (both social and political) and points to the evolutionary character of change in Cherry Orchardas opposed to the revolutionary nature of the change in Tango. The paper returns to the allegorical nature of the two plays and spells out in detail the allegorical connections to contemporary sociopolitical conditions in Russia, in the case of Cherry Orchard, and Poland, in the case of Tango. The paper concludes with the observation that Chekhov and Mrozek, each in his own way, uses his play to sound a warning against the tendency to resist change, since change in inevitable and resistance is futile."
