This paper is for a third year sociology course on the topic of social stratification. The paper argues that there is no significant difference between high and low culture; they are both determined by social networks.
From the Paper:"Social stratification is one of the most contentious issues in sociology. Researchers have spent a great deal of time trying to figure out if social stratification is based on natural conditions, social factors or a combination of both. For example, Andre Beteille in "The Idea of Natural Inequality" explains how Rousseau had great difficulties determining whether social inequalities were caused by natural or social factors(Beteille 62-63). One of the more interesting areas of thought on the nature of social stratification is focused on symbolic boundaries and social inequality."
