From the Paper:

"A print-based resource that can be used by students, families, community members and others in efforts to support effective transition services for students with disabilities is a journal article entitled "Alternative Sentencing: Using the 1997 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to Keep Children in School and out of Juvenile Detention" by Mark Peikin.
"This article clearly describes the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), as well as describes how attorneys can use the IDEA, as amended in 1997, to advocate for disabled juvenile offenders. It also informs the reader how to "gain access to services that can substitute for or negate a judge's perception that preventive detention and post-disposition incarceration are necessary" (Peikin, 2001, p. 139.)"
