The writer describes his experiences living in the community of Lakeside, a small city in the East County of San Diego, California. The writer relates that although the greater San Diego area is a very accepting and diverse city, Lakeside is primarily populated by White/Caucasian Americans and is considered by many people to be a racially intolerant city. The writer looks at the organizations dedicated to the welfare of the city and asserts that local legislation needs to address these racial issues.

Racial Issues in Lakeside
Ethnic Background of the Greater San Diego Area

From the Paper:

"Growing up in Lakeside, I never really experienced any kind of racism directed toward myself. That is because I am White. I am positive that if I belonged to a minority group, it would be a different story. Thinking back on my childhood I can't recall having many friends, if any, that did not look like me. If they didn't, they were either Hispanic or Native American. Of course, when I was a kid I really didn't think about people in terms of race. It was not until I was older that I began to realize how much racism enveloped this small city.
"I lived here in Lakeside from a young age until I was 11 years old. We moved out of state and returned when I was about 15 years old. When we came back, I could see signs of racism right away. Moving away from this atmosphere at a young age, I had only seen these things on TV or in movies. I remember it being very shocking when I witnessed them for the first time. Seeing this blatant disregard for people who were different is something that has stuck with me for a long time. It has helped me keep an open mind toward other cultures and people who are different than I."
