Description:

This paper discusess the interrelationship between music and program in Antonio Vivaldi's "Winter" violin concerto. The first part of the paper parses the conventions of Baroque concerto form followed by a brief discussion of Vivaldi's "Winter" violin concerto. Finally, the concerto and poetry text are examined side by side in an attempt to show that because the "Winter" concerto closely follows the conventions of a Baroque concerto, the music can stand on its own without the poetry.

From the Paper:

"Vivaldi standardized the fast-slow-fast movement schemata by frequently using it in his solo concertos. He also standardized a practice called ritornello form. "Ritorno" is the Italian word for "return" and describes the recurrence of the ritornello. The ritornello is the orchestral material that typically begins a movement from a solo concerto. The orchestra plays the ritornello throughout the concerto to contrast the soloist's material (Kerman and Tomlinson, 119-138). The ritornello alternates with the soloist throughout the duration of the piece. Later statements of the ritornello throughout the work are usually partial and are varied. The ritornellos are harmonic markers that confirm key areas and modulations throughout the course of the work. The first and last statements of the ritornello are in the home key. Ritornellos that happen in the middle of a solo concerto movement modulate away from the home key. "
