This paper analyzes the performance appraisal system at Vons Grocery Store and notes that the problems facing the company at present are in inventory control. The paper reviews three articles on performance management issues and then recommends an efficient appraisal system for the store. The paper addresses the need for rewards for good performance, involving employees in the process and offering more training programs in inventory.
From the Paper:"Vons grocery store was merged with Safeway on Dec. 16, 1996 after which Safeway came to own approximately 35% of Vons. Under the current Vons performance appraisal system, in operation since then, the employees are evaluated once a week, given the right to read their appraisals -- and required to acknowledge that they have read them. They can then give comment on the appraisals.
"Vons have in place a system for continuous development of the workforce -- training and development programs for new hires as well as others in areas as diverse as Retail Leadership and specific leadership and supervisory skills. This provides their employees the opportunity for advancement and the organization the facility of linking organizational business goals with job performance and evaluation of employees. Their internal job-posting program provides all of the employees the opportunity to diversify their job experience as well as improve their performance and achieve their career goals."
