This paper discusses the sense of loss and individual feels when he loses his mobility and the necessity for rehabilitative nursing. It goes on to introduce the Dorothea Orem's theory of self-care, explaining how the model states that rehabilitative nursing involves helping the individual regain his or her faculties in a structured manner.

From the Paper:

''The Dorothea Orem's Theory of Self-Care states that "each person has a need for self care in order to maintain optimal health and wellness" and that "each person possesses the ability and responsibility to care for themselves and dependants" (Bruce et al 2010, p.17). Orem defined self care as: "the ability to perform activities and meet personal needs with the goal of maintaining health and wellness of mind, body and spirit" (Bruce et al 2010, p.18). Merely because a person is not at his or her optional desired level of functioning does not mean that he or she has lost the desire and need to engage in basic acts of self-care. As a rehabilitative nurse, I know the individuals I deal with were functional before their illness and often experienced no serious deficits in basic self-care. I see it as my job to maximize their level of self-care at the highest level possible without setting unrealistic goals or taxing the pain threshold of the patient. Self-care must be individualized for every patient, depending on his or her physical condition and also his or her psychological hardiness.''
