Description:

This paper chronicles some of the different choices available to women who wish to give birth. The paper addresses the location of the birth that can be at home, at a birthing center, or in the hospital, and provides information regarding the use of epidurals and Caesarean sections. The paper also looks at the use of a doula during labor and discusses the advantages of breast feeding the newborn vs. giving formula. The paper shows how with a little research, an expectant mother can make informed decisions throughout her pregnancy, delivery and during the child's infancy.

From the Paper:

"The birthing process is an exceptionally personal and intimate process. Women have more available options than ever before. While more options can create a very personalized birthing experience, additional alternatives can also prove overwhelming for expecting mothers. The options for giving birth are seemingly limitless in our modern world. Births are becoming more and more customizable with a variety of options available. Each of these options presents benefits as well as negative aspects, and it is up to the individual to select the option that would be most advantageous for themselves as well as for their baby. As with any decision, it is crucial for the patient to make themselves aware of their different options and the pros and cons inherent with each of those options. With a little bit of research and a thorough understanding of the varying options, a woman can make an informed and appropriate decision concerning her specific birthing choice.
"The location of the actual birth is one of the most basic choices a patient should consider. There are several options available including a home birth, delivering at a birthing center, or performing a traditional hospital birth. Assuming that no complications arise which would expedite the delivery process, a woman is free to choose any one of these different alternatives. Each option involves specific pros and cons and may not be suitable for each individual birthing situation."
