"Oedipus was King of Thebes twelve years before the play even begins. His rise to the stature of King was in gratitude for freeing the people of Thebes from pestilence brought on the country by the Sphinx. The former king Laius is dead making it an additional honor for Oedipus to marry the now widowed Queen Jocasta. Oedipus enjoys years of honor as the King of Thebes until another pestilence rages on the people of Thebes. The citizens look to their King to rescue them as he had in the past. Creon, Queen Jocasta's brother, brings to Oedipus a message from Apollo's oracle that the pestilence will leave Thebes if the true murderer of former King..."
