"Nutrition plays an essential role in the pathology of wound healing because it allows for optimal healing. In addition, wounds cause an increase in body metabolism that can lead to extensive weight loss and a reduction in lean muscle mass, which then impairs wound healing (Nelson, 2003). Proper nutrition allows the body to regain its balance. Nurses need to understand the process of wound healing and include nutritional interventions in their care plans. Wound healing consists of three interrelated phases: inflammation; the proliferative stage; and a process of remodeling (Leininger, 2002).
