Description:

The paper asserts that part of what makes Florence Nightingale an icon of the nursing profession is that she knew her limitations. The paper explains that Florence Nightingale was primarily a surgical nurse and in her "Notes on Nursing" she clearly stated that the nursing as a handicraft was purposely not discussed due to her lack of experience in that particular part of the nursing profession. However, the paper relates that knowing her limitations does not mean that Florence Nightingale did not apply the same common sense to handicraft nursing as she did to surgical nursing. The paper discusses how the lack of common sense in treating the wounded and sick during her life was extremely frustrating for Nightingale, and she wrote down her notes to reach the masses and spread her thoughts on cleanliness, sanitation and the environment a patient is recuperating in.
