This paper explores the development of multicultural counseling with a focus on its application in the United States. The paper explains what a counselor must be able to do to be effective and also identifies the areas of awareness through which a counselor must go in the process of counseling a culturally different client. The paper asserts that the need for multicultural counseling is more important than it was ever before, simply to revive cultural tolerance in the land of the free.
From the Paper:"Multiculturalism has been defined as the fourth force in psychology, one, which complements the psychodynamic, behavioral and humanistic explanations of human behavior. Multiculturalism can be defined as "a wide range of multiple groups without grading, comparing, or ranking them as better or worse than one another and without denying the very distinct and complementary or even contradictory perspectives that each group brings with it." One of the most important debates within the field has to do with how this definition relates to specific groups within the context of a culture. This definition advocates a narrower meaning of multiculturalism, particularly as it relates to counseling. The narrower view is one where attention is directed toward "the racial/ethnic minority groups within that culture."
"Today, the "multi" in multiculturalism has more meaning than ever before. Multiculturalism has been referred to as psychology's "fourth force,' and is seen as "the hottest topic" in the counseling Profession. Much of this is driven by our recognition that we are fast becoming a multiracial, multicultural, and multilingual society. Members of minority groups stand poised to become the predominant population group in the United States, some say as early as 2040."
