Description:
The paper briefly addresses the cognitive complexity required to learn to read and then considers which methodologies, specifically data collection and procedures, are the most effective in helping pre-school children acquire language. The paper goes on to examine the methods of direct observation, preliminary, mid-range and post assessment testing and phonological and latent-variable measurement.
From the Paper:
"The contemporary world is challenging in many ways. While globalism has decreased the virtual distance between countries and peoples of the world, it also brings new challenges. More than ever, information is a commodity in which one can barely keep up, even in one's own field. The next generation will undoubtedly be expected to amass even more data at a far quicker pace than ever before. To do this we must prepare children for the learning and reading environment at even earlier ages. And while critics may decry that we are robbing children of the necessary joy of childhood, other scholars purport that learning to read can, and should, be a fun activity for the preschool aged child (Clay, 1977)."Certainly, there is no denying that the process of reading is one of the more complex tasks for any human - a number of disparate functions coming together. In essence, reading is a cognitive decoding process whereby individuals learn to translate symbols into sounds and then construct meaning from those combinations. Once the cognitive decoding is mastered, the process is then so automatic that almost the entire focus rests on interpretation and meaning. Reading, therefore, is a means of standardized language acquisition, and a mechanism for sharing, storing, and translating ideas and information."
