Description:

This paper is an analysis of Canadian South Asian second generation attitudes towards the choosing of a marriage partner. Traditional South Asian convention for marriage is that the parents and relatives choose the partner through a complex set of rules which may involve caste, astrology, and community factors. The case is made that second generation South Asian Canadians maintain individualistic attitudes as compared to collectivistic attitudes of the first generation group and this plays a large part in the first generation choosing partners for themselves.

From the Paper:

"South Asia is a region with one of the oldest extant cultures on the planet. Marriage is a time honoured tradition in this culture and the rituals and significance of this juncture in life have been passed down..."
