Description:

The paper relates that the city of Toronto has a total population of 5,072,075, of whom 2,746,480 are English-speakers, 58,590 are French-speakers, and 2,160,335 speak non-official languages. The paper details that of the last-mentioned, a half million speak Chinese or Mandarin, making this the most significant minority ethnic group. The paper relates that the second biggest minority group is the Italians, who number 185,765. All in all, the paper breaks this down as follows: 54% of the population is English-speaking; a mere 1% is French speaking; 43% of the population belongs to one or other ethnic minority; 10% of the population is of Chinese heritage; and 4% of the population is of Italian extraction (Statistics Canada, 2006, Population by mother tongue). The paper asserts that there might be scope for some stores catering to Italians, but in general, Chinese food would probably sell better!
