The paper discusses both the democratic and authoritarian types of leadership in nursing and discusses how while the democratic form is recommended, there is still a role for the authoritarian form of leadership in this high pressure environment. The paper then addresses the need for nurses leaders to undergo the rigors of leadership training to enable them to have the tools, techniques, and methodologies need to become leaders. From the Paper:"In every organizational setting, there are groups tasked to perform duties in order to achieve the goals set forth by the organization. The milieu of the medical and allied medical field is no different and those belonging thereto have the challenging endeavor of providing the best medical care and management to those requiring them. However, those in this field do not work independently but are organized in groups depending upon the core medical specialty they need to provide patients. Nurses are in the frontlines of providing the viable medical care for patients but like any other group, they perform as a team. The pressures on nursing leaders have never been greater. With an impending shortage of practicing nurses, imminent retirements of current leaders, health and safety challenges associated with stressful work environments, ever-advancing technology, increasing ethical dilemmas, and an uncertain economic climate, nurse leaders at all levels and in all types of health care organizations face declining optimism and confidence in a better future. (Wong & Cummings, 2009) Thus, the nurse-leader is charged with leading and managing the team to ensure a cohesive and synergized working group. In the same manner as in any leader-follower groups, the nurse-leader will need to adapt to the kind of leadership styles suited to the working environment. In a collegial and high expertise environment of nursing and the medical field, it is critical to adapt a leadership style apropos to the kind of members thereto."
