Description:

The paper looks at the strong cultural emphasis on innovation as a core strategy at the Apple corporation and discusses how the products that have resulted from Apple's manufacturing innovation competency have revitalized the company and revolutionized the personal electronics industry. The paper then looks at Ryanair as a company that has used innovation as a key to success in its service industry, and also shows how in the non-profit sphere, KickStart developed a model that converts donation funds into vibrant businesses in the developing world, an innovation based on the microfinance model.

From the Paper:

"The personal computer industry has become increasingly characterized by commoditization, wherein products became poorly differentiated and largely competed on the basis of price. Apple inherently had a product that was differentiated on the basis of its operating system, so decided to fully embrace that strategy and provide differentiation in its design as well. The company then followed through on this by applying those same design principles to other stock products such as mp3 players and PDAs.
"As a consequence, Apple has built an empire upon strength in a number of different products. Apple has singularly been able to tie these products together, playing on its strength in software. The focus on innovation from synergies has allowed Apple to succeed in driving business from one product line to another, something none of its major competitors has the capability of doing. The innovation, in particular with respect to finding innovative synergies, drives Apple's uniqueness in the personal electronics industry. At present, this is a source of sustainable competitive advantage and as such forms perhaps the most important component of Apple's long term growth strategy in all of its product lines."
