This paper discusses how a manager can encourage the employee to improve his/her performance. This first person account discusses how the manager creates an atmosphere in his working environment in which employees not only feel comfortable initiating the learning process, but also have the resources and support necessary to participate in this process. The paper explains that employees who are engaged in self-directed learning have a greater feeling of independence and confidence in the workplace, which translates into greater pride of performance and a general improvement of performance overall.

"One of my employees came into my office for a performance evaluation last week. This employee does a fine job, but his performance level is very much average. While there is nothing inherently wrong with being average, especially since most people will necessarily fall into this category, this particular employee was obviously capable of an above-average performance on the job. At least, it was obvious to me. I do not think that it was that obvious to my employee. Listening to the way he talked, it became clear that he had not been encouraged to excel throughout his life, and had, in fact, been lead by others to believe that he was merely average and would never amount to anything spectacular. I knew right away that his average performance was largely, possibly entirely, due to this negative conditioning he was used to receiving. However, I had seen glimpses of what he really could do when he wasn't even aware he was excelling. Though those times were few and far between, I knew this employee could be encouraged to improve his performance and reach his full potential.
