The paper relates that in the period of 1820-1970, approximately seven million individuals immigrated from Germany to the United States. The paper discusses how German immigration began to the U.S. in 1683, with the travel of thirteen German Quaker families to Pennsylvania, creating what became known as Germantown. The paper further relates that by 1790 there was a estimated 225,000 German immigrants in Pennsylvania and by the end of the 18th century "9% of the total population of the youthful United States" was of German origin.
