Description:

The paper relates that the Hmong are an aboriginal ethnic group whose ancient homelands are scattered throughout the hill country of Southeast Asia, principally China, Vietnam, and Laos. The paper further relates that many thousands fled to neighboring countries as well as to the United States. The paper explains that it is the life of one such Hmong family - and its American-born child - that is the focus of Anne Fadiman's book, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down", excerpts of which are discussed here.

From the Paper:

"The Hmong are an aboriginal ethnic group whose ancient homelands are scattered throughout the hill country of Southeast Asia, principally China, Vietnam, and Laos. During the 1960s and 1970s, many Hmong men fought in the so-called "Secret War" in Laos, an unpublicized extension of the Vietnam War. They fought against the communist insurgents with the support of the United States, and as a result of the communist victory in Vietnam the Hmong found themselves refugees. Many thousands fled to neighboring countries as well as to the United States (Fadiman, 1998.)"
