The paper discusses how prior to the nineteenth century, not many intersexuality cases were studied because medicine was not yet sufficiently advanced to explain this unusual physiological condition, in which the genitalia are ambiguous (Rosario, 1998; Mak, 2005). In fact, the paper notes that hermaphrodites were usually referred to as "marvelous" or "monstrous" creatures (Rosario, 1998, p. 52).
