Description:

This paper briefly looks at how hemodialysis is often a necessary procedure for individuals with kidney failure and how, administering the treatment poses an inevitable level of risk for the patient. The paper further discusses how nurses carefully monitor patients for common complaints during hemodialysis and also try to communicate with patients, so that patients can be more proactive in managing their health in the hospital and when they have returned home.

From the Paper:

"Other risk management procedures observed by facilities administrating dialysis include the question of what to do during complications. For example, at the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, the question of what heroic measures should be used is always discussed with the patient: "CPR is not a successful therapy for most dialysis patients who undergo it. Patients who undergo and survive CPR may have major complications. Because dialysis patients already often bear considerable burdens as a result of dialysis and the frequent occurrence of co-morbid conditions, such as diabetes, congestive heart failure and peripheral vascular disease, many dialysis patients elect to limit the extent of life-prolonging medical care"(Promoting excellence in end-of-life care, 2010, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)."
