This essay discusses issues pertaining to maintaining health in older adults. Topics discussed include strategies the GNP/APNP may use for evidence-based care in primary, secondary and tertiary care, use of assistive devices for safety and how to choose an appropriate devise, and one reason/approach to the explosive increase in chronic illness. The essay finds that the GNP or APNP can manage chronic pain by using 'just enough' pharmaceutical interventions to make the individual comfortable while avoiding side effects such as lethargy and physical dependence. The essay suggests that in later stages, the GNP or APNP should seek alternatives to pain medication rather than seeking further pharmaceutical solutions.

From the Paper:

"The term evidence-based care runs on the assumption that care should be provided by GNP/APNPs and other professionals after the individual care provider obtains research that outlines and demonstrates how such care provides the best practice for the best outcome. The GNP or APNP would ideally have access to a database which would instantly offer the latest guidelines and medical alerts for any given condition or treatment plan. In the tertiary care setting, the GNP or APNP would seek out such information and then utilize it to apply the best practice possible to help treat and or prevent possible complications associated with follow up care, such as home medication compliance or transportation to and from any follow up medical appointments utilizing all the resources available to the patient."
