Description:

This paper discusses how the economy, the lack of insurance or HMO coverage that many patients face, the nursing shortage, and problems with Medicare that prevent seniors from getting the coverage and assistance that they need are all issues facing the nurses. In paticular, it looks at how the biggest and most significant issue, though, is the fact that the population is aging and that means that more people are going to be needing medical care and how this is placing an increasing demand on nurses and stretching already thin resources to their breaking point in some areas.

From the Paper:

"The number of nurses and other hospital personnel that are being required because of Medicare is getting larger, but finding these people and keeping them around is difficult because there are not as many nurses entering the field and the pay that they receive is often not enough to keep them around. As the population continues to age, Medicare is having trouble meeting demands for care, and this includes the care that nurses provide. Because of this, they are required to raise their premiums and be more selective about the services that they cover. Many seniors are then having difficulty because they cannot pay their premiums. Sometimes, this leaves them without any insurance at all, at a time during their life in which they are especially vulnerable to illness, disease, broken bones, and countless other maladies (McLean & Hawkins, 1993)."
