This paper examines both the theoretical and research literature on the relationship between carrying a gun to school and involvement in a violent crime. A study is proposed that takes into account the research and tests the hypothesis that carrying a gun for any reason increases the liklihood of using the gun in a criminal way. Policy implications of the research findings are discussed.
From the Paper:"Despite the increased attention by policy makers and police forces to get tough on crime, the number of violent criminal offences in school aged youth has increased in North American youth. The number of arrests for murder has doubled in a ten year period, from 1980 to 1990 (Blumstein, 1995) and arrests for weapon related charges has steadily increased since 1985 among youth (Greenfeld, 1994). The implications of the increase in youth violence are significant in society. The criminal offences themselves directly contribute to murder..."
