Description:

This paper examines the rise to fame from humble beginnings of hockey player Gordie Howe. It discusses his achievements and notable wins such as winning the Stanley Cup to hos eventual retirement at the age of 51.

From the Paper:

"Coming from a poor family and living in a time of economic crisis, Howe never had the chance to have a new pair of skates and hockey equipments. But fate seemed to be smiling at Howe when his "significant moment came when a neighbor sold a sack of used belongings to his mother for cash. When they opened the bag, the first thing that he saw was a pair of skates. Five-year-old Howe had received his first pair of skates. From then on, Howe immersed himself in hockey, playing day in and day out throughout the year, using a puck, a tennis ball, or even clumps of dirt. (Advameg, 2007)" Most fathers would be a strong influence on their sons especially with sports. The case was otherwise with Howe and as he remembered in his autobiography: "Unlike Walter Gretzky [Wayne Gretzky's father], Dad wasn't a 'hockey father.' He was tough and demanding. I think his biggest contribution to my future success was teaching me the phrase: 'Don't let anyone throw dirt on you, because they'll just keep on doing it.' It was advice I took to heart, as some of the guys I played against will tell you. (Howe and Condron, 1999)""
