Description:

The paper discusses how a good deal of research has been conducted on sex role stereotyping, much of it focused on occupational stereotyping so that some occupations are considered female and some male. The paper looks at how in terms of crossover, most researchers focus on women taking jobs that have been considered typically male, a trend seen as part of the women's movement and as something new in American society. The paper shows how many occupations today considered male were not always so considered, and the division of work in non-Western and underdeveloped regions can be very different from what it is in Western society.

From the Paper:

"A good deal of research has been conducted on sex role stereotyping, much of it focused on occupational stereotyping so that some occupations are considered female and some male. In terms of crossover, most researchers focus on women taking jobs that have been considered typically male, a trend seen as part of the women's movement and as something new in American society. In truth, many occupations today considered male were not always so considered, and the division of work in non-Western and underdeveloped regions can be very different from what it is in Western society. Certain jobs have been seen as male only in the past, and the line has been blurred in the last several decades."
