The paper first looks at Piccolo et al.'s "The Relationship between Ethical Leadership and Core Job Characteristics," that discusses the original job characteristics model (JCM) and how it might be elaborated by adding ethical leadership. Next, the paper reviews Neubert et al.'s "The Virtuous Influence of Ethical Leadership Behavior: Evidence from the Field" and points out its similarities and differences to the article by Piccolo et al. Finally, the paper examines the third article by Pearce, Manz and Sims; "The Roles of Vertical and Shared Leadership in the Enactment of Executive Corruption: Implications for Research and Practice" where the authors focus on a model of shared leadership and its potential to affect not only leadership, but also the work ethic of employees. The paper notes that all three articles show that leaders have a significant influence upon the work climate and the work satisfaction and commitment experienced by employees. The paper also notes the wave of corruption exposed in large corporations and suggests that shared leadership is a potential deterrent for such behavior and the concomitant longevity of organizations.
From the Paper:"In "The relationship between ethical leadership and core job characteristics," Piccolo et al. (2010), the authors discus the original job characteristics model (JCM) and how it might be elaborated by adding ethical leadership. In this way, an expanded JCM is created that functions on the basis of a highly ethical viewpoint from leadership. In addition, the authors examine how the inclusion of such ethical leadership might influence task significance, job autonomy, effort, and job performance. These effects, according to the authors, might then be demonstrated to affect an employee's motivation, task performance, and organizational citizenship behavior (Piccolo et al., 2010, p. 259).
"The findings of the study then indicate that ethically normative behavior by leadership can have a significant impact on the JCM elements mentioned above. In this way, leaders can shape the motivation of workers by modelling a strong ethical principle of work. The purpose of the study was to test a model of JCM by which ethical leadership has an effect upon task and citizen performance as mediated by elements such as task significance, autonomy, and effort. In this model, leadership plays a much more intrinsic role than in the traditional JCM."
