Description:

The paper describes an ethical case concerning a zoning instructor who will ignore county health regulations and allow the Sandwich Blitz store to remain open on condition he receives a bribe. The paper identifies the ethical dilemmas faced both by the manager himself and the owners of this chain of stores. The paper considers the impacts of both accepting and refusing this offer of a bribe and highlights how ethics are not nearly as clear cut as they may seem.

From the Paper:

"The manager himself faces several unique ethical dilemmas. First, there is the issue of the actual dumpster location. The new county health regulation can be assumed to be in the best interests of the public; fudging its placement causes an ethical dilemma in its effects on the community. The manager must weigh the public need against the private interests of the company (Putnam 2010).
"At the same time, the manager has an ethical duty to Jack and Jill, the store owners, to provide them with the most efficient and profitable business possible given other external ethical considerations (Putnam 2010). That is, the manager has an ethical duty to make sure his Sandwich Blitz earns money, and as much money as possible, while still ensuring the safety and satisfaction of all stakeholders--from customers to employees (Putnam 2010). These two ethical issues do not exist separately from each other, without influence or debate between the two issues, but rather the negotiation of these ethical dilemmas requires that they be taken into account together--the manager must weigh the needs of the community and the simple ethical imperative to remain within the bounds of the law against the needs of his employers, and the success of the business that he operates for their profit."
